As we concluded African American History Month, I was asked why don’t we see as many American flags and stickers in the black community. My answer has been very simple: African American people have to be some of the most patriotic people on the planet.
What other race of people fought in the American Revolution and was still denied full citizenship?
What other race of people fought in the Civil War and still was denied equality? What other race of people fought in World War I and came home to lynchings in their uniforms? What other race of people fought in World War II and still had to come home to segregated facilities?
What other race of people after fighting in all of the wars, working and laboring for a country for free for over 300 years, still didn’t have the right to vote in democracy until the 1965 Voting Rights Act?
We fought for a country that didn’t always fight for us. We are true Americans, and our legacy and history reflect this.
